Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice dating back thousands of years. When the oil used is coconut oil, its special antimicrobial properties result in a very effective technique, although good quality sunflower or sesame oil can also be used. The high lauric content of coconut oil makes it an especially strong inhibitor of a wide range of pathogenic organisms, from viruses to bacteria to protozoa. This can result in improved oral health – gum disease, infected teeth, plaque buildup, bad breath, and prevention of tooth decay.
Oil pulling can also lessen the overall toxic load of the body by pulling out pathogens and preventing their spread to other areas of your body. When done correctly, oil pulling has a significant cleansing, detoxifying and healing effect on the entire body.
Oil pulling is simple. Basically, it involves rinsing your mouth with about a tablespoon of coconut oil, much like you would with using a mouthwash (just don’t tilt your head back and gargle). The oil is moved around your mouth by gently pushing, pulling, and drawing it through your teeth for a period of 15 – 20 minutes. This process allows the oil to neutralize and “pull out” bacteria, viruses, fungi and other debris. After working the oil around for 15 – 20 minutes (you can begin with 5 – 10 minutes, there will still be some benefit), spit it out and rinse your mouth with water. Do NOT swallow the oil as it’s loaded with bacteria and toxins. Rinsing with salt water may have some additional benefit to removing any toxins that are left in your mouth.
If you’re not a fan of the taste of virgin or extra virgin coconut oil, you can buy coconut oil that has been slightly more refined and has no taste or smell, or use a good quality sunflower or sesame oil. Ask your health food store for a recommendation. Organic is important with all types, however.
Please note that this practice should supplement your regular dental hygiene program, not replace it.
